An hour later, Lexy had gotten packed, complaining the entire time, unsure what was going on. Now, her and Pablo’s suitcases were sitting side by side near the foyer, but out of sight from the front door, in case anyone showed up unexpectedly. Lexy kept running back and forth between her room, adding more and more items, until both bags bulged to the point that they looked like they might burst.

Pablo was crying, upset by the sudden change in routine and sensing that something out of the ordinary was happening.

“Does this have something to do with the robbery?” Lexy asked, over the baby’s screaming.

Giorgio dodged the question like he had all the others. He, too, was adding items to the single suitcase he’d allowed himself, making sure he had collected the most important items from their hiding places—his fake passports, international driver’s licenses, and various secret stashes of cash. And, that big fat pink diamond that Jakob Henikstein had sniffed out.

His ankle was throbbing again, perhaps from the anxiety. Every five minutes or so he checked the balance in the company bank account from his phone, but it still only contained two million dollars and change, the same amount as it held the day of the robbery.

“Where’s my damn money?” he muttered, and glanced at his watch—that paper-pushing minister had said “immediately,” and it was almost four o’clock. The bank closed at five and no express wires could be initiated after that time.

Giorgio was aware of Lexy watching him. They were in the foyer and she was finally feeding Pablo—she had him propped up on the love seat, a bright red bib around his neck.

At that instant, the buzzer from the front gate rang.

Giorgio whirled around to the security console, his heart rate leaping to a gallop.

A car had pulled up to the gate. A woman was at the wheel, peering expectantly up at the camera. She had dark brown hair and looked vaguely familiar.

When Giorgio stepped over to the console, he let out a gasp as he moved closer to the display—he was hardly able to believe the information that his one eye was feeding to his brain.

There was no doubt in his mind that the woman gazing up at the camera was Elaine Brogan.
